Powerful ways to build self-discipline
You’ll be surrounded by temptations and have big dreams but how do you build your will power and self-discipline to make it through any challenge life throws your way?
It’s pretty cliché to say that it’s all up to you but that’s true. It can be hard to learn how to resist procrastinating or resisting short term gratification. But if you want to better your life in general you have to accept a certain level of discomfort now.
1. Ask yourself why
As you start to build your work ethic you need to ask yourself an important question: Why am I doing this?
Having a strong and very personal reason to guide you through the beginning stages of this process is crucial. Think about the reward of achieving whatever it is that you set out to do and also think about the consequences of failing to do so. In the early stages of developing a habit motivation is key. Once the habit’s developed it will guide itself.
2. One step at a time
Building self-discipline is very hard and you can instantly manage to do it in all areas of your life. If you try to adopt 6 habits at once you’ll be doing fine for a while but eventually fail. Focus on one area of your life at a time. If for example doing well on your tests is the most important thing to you devote all your will power to developing studying habits.
If you try to get the perfect scores on your tests, go to the gym and learn a new language all at once you’ll drain yourself and never actually adopt any of these habits.
3. Don’t rationalize
You’re trying to study but your friends are having a party. It couldn’t hurt to go just this one time, right? If you find yourself repeating a harmful pattern you need to cut yourself of until you learn to have better judgment. Of course you should be going out and enjoying life but you need to learn how to stop yourself from doing that when you have responsibilities.
It can be a long and tiring path but in the end all of your goals will be accomplished and there’s no greater feeling than that. Always know that you are in fact the master of your own sea!
